Eckstein and Roosevelt win awards at Reno Jazz Festival

Eckstein Middle School and Roosevelt High School both snagged awards at the the Reno Jazz Festival this weekend.

Eckstein’s Jazz Band, directed by Moc Escobedo (“Mr. E.”), won two division and four soloist awards, while the jazz choir and combo took first place in the middle school division.

The soloist award winners from Eckstein were: Santos Sharma (outstanding tenor saxophonist); Augsta Drumheller (outstanding middle school vocalist); Jesse Becket-Herbett (outstanding middle school saxophone); and Porter Jones (outstanding middle school trombone).

Roosevelt High School’s Jazz Band III took second place in the Apprentice II division.

Fun fact: According to the Seattle Times, the jazz band that took first place in the middle school division is directed by Matt McKagan, a Roosevelt High School graduate and brother of former Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan (also an RHS grad).
