Fire in bathroom at Roosevelt High School; no injuries reported

Updated 7:30 p.m.

Fire trucks and aid cars responded to a fire at Roosevelt High School this afternoon shortly before 1:00 p.m. A student inside the school reported that a fire was set in a boys bathroom on the second floor.

“It’s happened before, but there’s never this much smoke,” the student told us.

Everyone inside the building was evacuated to the football field for roughly an hour while the fire department investigated the fire.

Because the fire caused heavy smoke on the second floor, school administrators made the decision to cut classes short for the day. Shortly after 2:00 p.m., students who had classes on the second floor were taken one class at a time to retrieve their belongings and then were sent home.

A robo call went out earlier this evening from Principal Brian Vance to let parents and students know that the building was free of smoke this evening. (Sorry kids, that means there’s still school tomorrow.) Although the damage was minimal, Vance stressed that the offense is still a serious one. Anyone who has information about the fire should contact the principal or police.
