Ask Roosiehood: When will the Roosevelt Reservoir get a cover?

Roosevelt Reservoir, Seattle, WashingtonQuestion of the Day: When will the Green Lake Reservoir be covered and what are the city’s plans for it? Park? Soccer field? Dog park?

The Roosevelt Reservoir (formerly the Green Lake Reservoir—it was renamed in 1999 when the Roosevelt Neighborhood Plan was adopted) has been in line to either be covered or decommissioned for some time now. Now that the Maple Leaf Reservoir covering project is in full swing and due to finish mid-year, people have been wondering if the Roosevelt Reservoir is next.

Answer: The fact sheet for the Seattle Public Utilities’ reservoir covering project states:

“Roosevelt Reservoir is planned to be decommissioned after Maple Leaf is finished. Volunteer Reservoir will also likely be decommissioned in the future.”

It doesn’t appear that any final resolution for use of the property post-decommission has been made, but we’ll post an update when we hear more.

The good news is this: officials in charge of drinking water have found that covering reservoirs has an unintended benefit: decreased loss of water due to decreased evaporation. The water savings is so great, that they now find they need fewer reservoirs.

We need to begin a discussion as soon as possible, what we would like to see go in here. An enlarged park? A soccer field? A community center? It is very seldom that such a large piece of land becomes available in the city of Seattle, and with budgets tight now and in the forseeable future, all bets are off on what might happen.

I vote for a private/public partnership: Since money is not floating around for a new community center, how about a new YMCA, with a 50 year lease from the city? Think of all the people this could serve, as the Roosevelt light rail station brings increased density while rising fuel prices decrease car travel. This end of town needs a good pool…
